What students want!

Posted in b. informed, b. secure, other by Baskeys on March 21, 2011

baskeys know what students want because we have a secret way of finding out…   we ask!

Actually, we only assume it’s a secret because not many other student accommodation companies seem to do it.

Everything starts with location & accommodation

Location  -  we ask “what do you need to have right on your doorstep?” and  ”What do you need to have on a public transport line?”

Accommodation – we ask “what do you need to have in your home?” and  ”What do you need to keep your home safe?”

Then, of course, there’s….

Us -  we ask “what do you actually need from us?”.

Simple questions with simple answers.

And baskeys understand that different students require different things – amenities, night life, day life, pubs, clubs, transport, open parkland, sports clubs, libraries.  All these things determine where we buy our properties.

Student safety…

Posted in b. informed, b. secure by Baskeys on March 13, 2011

… the baskeys way.

It’s incredibly important to baskeys that our students stay safe when in our care.

We know you’re grownups but, at the risk of sounding like your parents, there will always be things you don’t know & don’t consider. And there are some things you’ll be too busy studying or having fun to even think about.

Here’s some gentle advice – not a lecture, you’ll have enough of those in Uni!

Bad news – Statistically, students are one of the most likely groups to fall victim to crime. This is because students own more branded consumer goods, per head, than any other group in society.

Good news – Good for you for owning nice things! But please keep them safe. Don’t flaunt them in public, keep your phone and wallet in a zipped pocket, put branded carrier bags inside supermarket bags and, ladies, don’t keep everything in your handbag; have emergency cash and your phone on your person. If your bag goes, you’ll still be okay.

Bad news – Students are 3 times more likely to be victims of burglary.

Good news – This statistic is based on the fact that students can forget to lock doors and windows; especially late at night and especially in the summer. So, it’s easily solved! Making your home secure for the night, whether you’re in or out, is vital. Have a routine, have a rota, be organised! And always mark your property with the initials of your University and your student number. This makes them harder to sell, and easier to find.

Bad news – Sometimes, drink can make you braver than you should be.

Good news – Walk in groups at night, keep your taxi money separate from your drinking money, use cash machines during the day.  It’s all common sense really.

Great news – baskeys is a personable business run by ex Newcastle students and current Newcastle parents. We know how to stay safe and we’re happy to talk about anything that worries you.

Fabulous news – Sometimes there’s the assumption that student area = cheap area = rough area. Baskeys don’t work like that and we never will. Your student days should be happy, content and safe. Location, amenities, good pubs, great restaurants, libraries, reliable transport… the working community expects nothing less, why should you?

The best news – baskeys doesn’t disappear as soon as the rent’s paid. We commit to you for the entire time you’re in one of our homes. If you don’t need us, that’s fine… but if you do; you know where we are.
